  The Village of Thayer is located approximately five miles east and six miles north of York. It is approximately 45 minutes west of Lincoln and 60 minutes east of Grand Island. Thayer lies 6 miles north of U.S. Highway 34.

York Municipal Airport, 15 miles west of Thayer, has a 5,900 foot lighted concrete runway and a 4,300 foot turf runway with full instrment land capabilities. Jet and 100 low lead fuel, hangar space for rent/storage, courtesy car services, maintenence services for aircraft, and flight instruction are available at the airport. There are 26 private planes hangared at the York Municipal Airport; none are available for charter. Many local companies utilize the expanded airport, with corportate planes flying in daily. The elevation at the airport is 1,671 ft. Scheduled air service is available at the Lincoln Airport, 45 miles east, and at Central Nebraska Regional Airport near Grand Island, approx 55 miles west.

Members of the Village Board are elected at large on the basis of alternating four-year terms. A volunteer fire department provides protection for the area, which is a consolidated effort with the Village of Gresham. Regarding law enforcement, Thayer is served by the York County Sheriff's Department which has eight sworn officers and 12 support personnel. Regular patrol is provided by the county department, which has six marked cruisers, a variety of communication equipment and all the standard enforcement equipment required by the state. The Nebraska State Patrol Troop C, headquartered in Grand Island, NE, also provides service for the Waco area.


Thayer students travel by bus to Centennial Public Schools in Utica, NE, which is located six miles south and eight miles east of Thayer. The district serves a total of 525 students from the communities of Beaver Crossing, Utica, Waco, Thayer, and Cordova. The 2009-2010 valuation of $590,276,786. Eighty percent of Centennial School District high school students take the ACT, with an average score of 22.8. Seventy-five percent of graduating seniors attend college immediately upon graduation, while twenty-five percent enter the workforce directly after graduating. Opportunities for higher education and continuing education in the county are available at York College, a 4-year private liberal arts college located in the city of York. Other colleges and universities within a 60-mile radius include: Central Community College, Concordia University, Doane College, Hastings College, Southeast Community College, and the University of Nebraska in Lincoln.

The Thayer park was recently updated with new playground equipment, as well as other park immenities. There is also a monument that has been placed in the park, commemorating the historic school that was once in operation in Thayer.


A number of medical facilities are in close proximity to Thayer, as there are hospitals located in Seward and York, NE, with a specialty clinic also located in York. Medical clinics are located in Seward, York and Utica. York General Hospital, a part of York General Health Care Services, delivers medical in it 25- bed acute care facility with all private rooms. Medical services include emergency services, MRI and CT scanning, inpatient and outpatient surgical suite, obstetrics, a specialty clinic, and additional services. Multiple specialty clinics at the York General Health Care Services are served by more than 40 specialists who travel to York on a rotation schedule. The Physician owned York Medical Clinic has been serving the area since 1965. The clinic, with its own high-complex labrotory and x-ray and ultrasound capabilities, is staffed with 7 family practice physicians, three physical assistants, and one diabetic educator. The York Medical Clinic and York General Health Care Services jointly provide an obstetrics probram. Satellite clinics are operated in Stromsburg and Exeter.
