Nebraska Public Power District (NPPD), the state's largest electric utility, has a diverse mix of generation, including nuclear, coal, hydro, gas and oil, and wind. Additional Comments: The city has approximately 2 miles of 34,500 volt sub-transmission lines, 1 mile of 7,200 volt distribution lines and 17 miles of 4,160 volt distribution lines within Superior. Also, two substations with a combined capacity of 10,000 KVA. The city is fed by 115,000 volt transmission lines tied to the statewide grid system.

The City of Superior operates the municipal natural gas system, including some of the surrounding areas. The gas system uses a looped grid of 4-inch diameter mains running at 35 PSI pressure. All the gas mains have been replaced in the past five years; the city is replacing the remaining service lines internally through a multi-year program. The gas is supplied from Southern Star Pipeline Company through an 8-inch diameter feed running at more than 100 PSI pressure. The feed has about 60% excess capacity.

The City of Superior operates the municipal drinking water system, including some of the surrounding areas. The water is supplied by nine wells which have an average depth of 84 feet. The system has a combined pumping capacity of 2,300 gallons per minute. The water treatment facility has been updated with a new chlorination and fluoridation system.

The City of Superior operates the wastewater treatment facility. The plant is currently running about 64% capacity. In 2012, the city rebuilt the primary trickling filter treatment system and associated pumps and piping througout the plant. Since 2009, the city has invested heavily sliplining the sewer mains throughout town. While many more years remain, the system will be virtually new when complete.

The City of Superior derived its name from early settlers who spoke of the "superior" quality of land stretching east and west along the Republican River Valley. The town was incorporated August 4, 1879. The City has an elected mayoral style of government with six council members.
